Description

One of those places you’d never find unless someone told you about it. Tucked off Washington Street in a mostly residential stretch, it’s easy to miss — which is probably why it still feels like a proper local spot.

Cagney’s sits somewhere between a dive, a neighbourhood bar, and a low-key sports bar. Bit rough around the edges, but in a good way. Inside, it’s split into two separate spaces — a main bar area where most people end up, and a smaller side room that’s often used for functions. The bar itself is the centre of things, with seating on both sides and a few high-tops around the walls. It fills up quickly during games and can get loud.

Where it stands out is the food. This isn’t standard pub grub. It leans more towards a casual gastropub menu, with a lot of creative takes on comfort food. The eggrolls are a big one — Reuben, buffalo chicken, smoked gouda and bacon — all done properly. Wings, loaded chips, burgers stacked higher than they need to be, and a buffalo mac and cheese that sneaks up on you. It’s heavy, but that’s the point.

The beer list is stronger than you’d expect from a place like this. Good mix of craft options, including harder-to-find ones, alongside the usuals. Full bar as well, with whiskey flights if you’re in the mood to test your judgement.

It’s a social place. Trivia nights, big Boston games, groups meeting up — that sort of energy. Staff keep things moving along in a lovely friendly manner.
