Proper Southie dive bar that’s managed to stay itself while everything around it’s changed. This is where old Southie and new Southie meet, without much ceremony.

It’s been through a few names over the years, but Murphy’s stuck — and it feels like it. Inside is a mix of neon signs, dart boards, arcade bits, and all sorts of memorabilia that’s built up over time rather than being designed.

It’s had its moments on screen too. Scenes from The Departed were filmed here with Ben Affleck, and Anthony Bourdain stopped in for No Reservations. You’ll still get the odd visitor coming in because of that, but it hasn’t changed the place.

Cash only, with an ATM by the door. Drinks are cheap, pours are solid, and the jukebox gets used properly. It’s the sort of bar where you can buy a round without thinking twice. There’s a strong connection here to first responders and the military — you’ll see patches and tributes all over the walls. A lot of the staff and regulars have ties there, and it’s something the place takes seriously.

St. Patrick’s Day is a big one. Being in South Boston, it leans fully into it — packed, loud, and exactly what you’d expect.

Friendly bartenders, easy conversation, and a proper neighbourhood feel. Not trying to impress anyone, which is why it works.
